Richard Hanson-James joins Thompson & Bryan

Richard Hanson-James has joined loss adjusters Thompson & Bryan as a Director in our new complex and contentious claims division.

Richard has enjoyed a distinguished career in international loss adjusting and spent the last 25 years representing policyholders in difficult and complex claims in all classes of business from life to private marine, bloodstock to liability, financial contingency to executive crime. He is a chartered loss adjuster with expertise and qualifications in law, insurance, and accounting and finance.

Richard said: “I’m delighted to work with Thompson & Bryan. It’s a firm with a long-standing reputation in policyholder advocacy and is expanding into the wider areas of dispute resolution and non-PDBI claims. I very much look forward to being part of the team.”

Paul Lawrence, Managing Director of Thompson & Bryan, added: “Richard is a very valuable addition to the team. He specialises in the management of contentious claims where insurers dispute liability or quantum. He is a fellow of both the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Chartered institute of Loss Adjusters, so we are really happy to welcome him aboard.”

In 1999 Richard Hanson-James set up Claim Experts Ltd (CEL). This was the UK’s first national chartered loss adjusting company dedicated to policyholder representation. He ran the company until its disposal in 2013 and now works as an independent consultant.

He has also chaired the claims working party of the British Insurance Law Association, whose report on insurance law reform has led to recent legislation granting greater protection to policyholders.

Richard is also an active advocate of policyholders’ rights in the trade press and wider print and broadcasting media.
